Job Summary
As a Senior Systems Engineer at WYRE Technology, you will serve as a senior technical resource responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and improving customer technology environments. This role focuses on complex infrastructure, cloud, security, networking, Microsoft 365, server, and endpoint solutions across managed customer environments.
The Senior Systems Engineer works closely with the Support Team, Account Managers, project teams, and leadership to ensure customer environments are stable, secure, well-documented, and aligned with best practices. This position is responsible for advanced escalation support, project implementation, technical standards, proactive system improvement, and mentoring other technical team members.
This role is ideal for a highly skilled engineer who can balance hands-on technical execution with strategic thinking, customer communication, documentation, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Systems Engineering & Infrastructure Management
- Design, implement, administer, and troubleshoot Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, file services, permissions, and domain services.
- Manage and support Microsoft 365 environments, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Entra ID, Intune, conditional access, and security configurations.
- Support virtualization platforms, backup systems, disaster recovery solutions, firewalls, switches, wireless systems, and network infrastructure.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting across servers, workstations, networks, cloud platforms, security tools, and business applications.
- Evaluate customer environments and recommend improvements to increase reliability, security, scalability, and operational efficiency.
- Implement technical standards, baseline configurations, and best-practice architecture across managed environments.
Project Implementation & Technical Delivery
- Lead or participate in technical projects, including migrations, server upgrades, Microsoft 365 implementations, network improvements, security deployments, endpoint management, and cloud initiatives.
- Scope, plan, document, and execute technical work in alignment with customer requirements and internal standards.
- Coordinate with vendors, customer stakeholders, Account Managers, and internal teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Create implementation plans, rollback plans, testing procedures, and post-project documentation.
- Ensure projects are completed with a high level of quality, customer communication, and technical accuracy.
Escalation Support & Incident Resolution
- Serve as a senior escalation resource for complex technical issues that require engineering-level troubleshooting.
- Lead root cause analysis for recurring or high-impact issues and implement permanent corrective actions.
- Assist with outages, security incidents, backup failures, infrastructure degradation, and complex customer-impacting events.
- Engage third-party vendors and manufacturers with complete logs, diagnostics, reproduction steps, and clear escalation details.
- Communicate technical findings and resolution plans clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Security, Compliance, & Risk Reduction
- Apply security best practices across Microsoft 365, endpoint management, identity, network, and server environments.
- Support implementation and validation of MFA, conditional access, least privilege, endpoint protection, backup controls, and secure configuration baselines.
- Assist with vulnerability remediation, security investigations, access reviews, and compliance-related technical requests.
- Support customer environments that may require alignment with cybersecurity frameworks or compliance expectations.
- Identify risks within customer environments and recommend practical remediation steps.
Documentation, Standards, & Process Improvement
- Create and maintain high-quality documentation in IT Glue or other internal documentation platforms.
- Develop technical standards, SOPs, implementation checklists, network diagrams, configuration notes, and escalation playbooks.
- Identify recurring technical issues and recommend standardization, automation, or architectural changes to reduce support volume.
- Contribute to internal process improvement initiatives that improve service quality, operational efficiency, and customer outcomes.
- Ensure customer environments are documented accurately enough to support consistent service delivery across the team.
Mentorship & Technical Leadership
- Mentor Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 technicians by providing guidance, coaching, and technical knowledge transfer.
- Lead or participate in internal technical training sessions.
- Help raise the technical maturity of the team through documentation, peer review, and process standardization.
- Model strong troubleshooting methodology, professional communication, accountability, and ownership.
- Collaborate with leadership to identify skills gaps, process gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
Customer Experience & Communication
- Communicate professionally and clearly with customers during projects, escalations, and technical planning discussions.
- Translate technical concepts into practical business impact for customer stakeholders.
- Work with Account Managers to identify customer needs, risks, improvement opportunities, and technology roadmap items.
- Ensure customers receive timely updates, clear expectations, and high-quality technical outcomes.
- Maintain a customer-focused approach while balancing security, scalability, and technical best practices.
Qualifications
Experience
- 7+ years of experience in IT support, systems administration, systems engineering, or infrastructure engineering preferred.
- Prior experience in a Managed Service Provider environment strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex technical implementations and resolving advanced infrastructure issues.
- Experience supporting multiple customer environments with varying technical architectures and business needs.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage priorities, and own technical outcomes from planning through completion.
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field preferred.
- Equivalent job experience may be considered in place of formal education.
- Relevant certifications preferred, such as Microsoft Administrator or Expert-level certifications, Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert, Azure Administrator Associate, CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Network+, CCNA, VMware, backup, firewall, or security-related certifications.
- Continued professional development and technical learning are expected.
Skills
- Advanced troubleshooting skills across server, network, endpoint, cloud, identity, and security environments.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, and endpoint management.
- Strong understanding of Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, permissions, and identity management.
- Working knowledge of networking concepts including VLANs, routing, switching, VPNs, NAT, firewall rules, wireless, and subnetting.
- Experience with backup, disaster recovery, endpoint security, EDR, RMM, PSA, and documentation tools.
- Ability to create clear technical documentation, project plans, SOPs, and customer-facing summaries.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
